RANCHO SANTA FE — “This Land is Our Land” was the theme of the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club’s annual Flower Show and Plant Sale held May 3 and May 4.
The Garden Club was brimming with floral arrangements entered in four different categories: artistic arrangements; vignettes; miniatures; and horticulture.
Ribbons were awarded for first place, second place, third place, honorable mention and special honors. In addition, seven perpetual awards were presented.
“Anna Dorazio won the most ribbons,” said Pat Merino, advisor to the Flower Show committee, when asked whose floral arrangements were outstanding. Dorazio deservedly won many ribbons in many different categories, but perhaps Merino was being modest, for she and Flower Show Chairman Ginger Bord won a special award for their vignette entry “The Star Spangled Banner.”
La Verne Schlosser served as a co-chair, in charge of the judges, who bestowed a first-place ribbon to centenarian Ruth Milliken for her 20-year-old amaryllis.
The well-attended Flower Show was dedicated to the memory of Robert O. Cleary, also known as “Mr. Volunteer.” For more than 30 years, Cleary served the community in various causes and organizations. For many of those years, he served as president of the Garden Club.
Not only was “Mr. Volunteer” a World War II hero, but he was a hero around the village as well.
