OCEANSIDE — Flying BMX stunt bikes, loud rock ‘n’ roll music and more than a dozen booths brought teens and their families out to celebrate Teen Fest at the Oceanside Pier Amphitheater on April 12.

Among those on hand to give away freebies and share information were MiraCosta College, Stand Up for Kids, Frontline Ministries and plenty of vendors.

Giveaways initially sparked teens’ interest and then prompted questions. “We’re getting them all — families, parents, teenagers, hobbyists, players,” said Randall Granados of Oceanside music shop Sound Odyssey.

“Kids are asking what opportunities there are for jobs, mentor programs, internships,” said Vernon Pertelle of Tri City Medical Center.

A goody bag from North County Health Services’ Teen SMART program was stuffed with a free T-shirt, a water bottle and information on health services. Teens can sign up for Teen SMART services and have health information kept confidential, said Yesenia Scott, a health educator with North County Health Services. HIV screening, pregnancy tests and family planning are all covered under Teen SMART.

The MiraCosta College booth fielded inquiries from event attendees ranging from 10-year-olds to adults.

“A lot of people are interested in knowing the summer schedule,” said Tabitha Neal of MiraCosta College. Others asked about transfer programs or education requirements for future careers.

Attendees walked away with a smile and plenty of information. “I love just watching, enjoying the music and skaters,” said 15-year-old Lauren Velasquez.
