City adopts ban against ‘condo-hotels’

SOLANA BEACH — City Council officially adopted its ban on “condo-hotels” Jan. 9, making Solana Beach the first city in California to altogether prohibit these types of properties.

“Condo-hotels” are hotels and resorts that combine traditional guest services with individual ownership.

The city council voted 5-0 to pass the new ordinance.

Deputy City Attorney Lisa Foster said the council did plenty of research before adopting the ban.

“The main justification for enacting this ordinance is to protect and enhance visitor accommodation facilities and public access in the city of Solana Beach’s coastal zone,” Foster said. “That is a right which is very highly protected under state law.”

In other news at the meeting, the City Council honored Chandra Collure, who officially retired after 14 years as the city engineer and director of public works for Solana Beach.

Collure was involved in several major development projects over the years, including the Lomas Santa Fe grade separation and the Interstate 5/Lomas Santa Fe Interchange Project. He also monitored and managed the daily maintenance of city streets, sewers, parks, streetlights, drainage and beach access.

Mayor Joe Kellejian thanked Collure for his dedicated service.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with you over the years,” Kellejian said. “I will remember you and what you have done for the city of Solana Beach forever.”
